As Americans…Do You Remember

       UNCLE SAM

"EA-U.S.," was marked on military provisions at…"Elbert Anderson’s storeyard at Troy on Hudson (now Troy), New York."  Samuel Wilson, "Uncle Sam", was the yards inspecting superintendent.

"Thus "Uncle Sam" and the United States became one…"  Uncle Sam

Then later (1868) the well known political cartoonist, "Thomas Nast (1840-1902)", while with "Harper’s Weekly, drew Uncle Sam as we recognize him today, adding the beard and putting stars on his vest, copying some of the details from a drawing he had made of the famous circus clown Dan Rice…"

Nast…inventor of the symbols…the donkey (Democrats) and the elephant (Republicans).

According to Stuart Berg Flexner, a dictionary writer, and author of
I Hear America Talking, Lincoln, during the Civil War, called him "our best recruiting sergeant."
